Hamilton City Council has decided to remove the bronze statue of Captain Hamilton from Civic Square after a formal request from Waikato-Tainui.
The request comes after a growing international drive to remove statues which are seen to represent cultural disharmony and oppression.
The bronze statue of Captain John Fane Charles Hamilton was originally gifted to Hamilton City by the Gallagher Group in 2013.
Captain John Fane Charles Hamilton died at the battle of Pukehinahina (Gate Pā) in Tauranga (then known as Te Papa) on April 29, 1864.
As recounted by archaeologist Nigel Prickett in Landscapes of Conflict, on the eve of the battle, nine British officers were hosted for supper at the Elms mission house by Archdeacon and Mrs Brown.
Within 24 hours, all but one was dead or mortally wounded. The casualties included Captain Hamilton, commander of HMS Esk, and his cousin, Captain Robert Hamilton, of the 43rd Light Infantry.
Chief Executive Richard Briggs says the decision to remove the piece was made following a request from Waikato-Tainui yesterday.
He says it had become clear the statue was likely to be vandalised.
'We know this statue is contentious for a number of our community members. It is the right thing for the Council to take the opportunity to look at the long-term plan for this artwork and determine where and how it might fit in to the city's future.
'We also have public safety concerns. The statue is firmly embedded into Civic Square and sits on top of the Garden Place underground carpark. If the statue were to be forcefully removed from its current position, as has been indicated, it could severely undermine the integrity of the building below it. We can't allow for that to happen so the removal of the statue will be coordinated in a professional and responsible manner.”
Briggs says the removal of the statue will be the start of wider discussions with key city stakeholders. It was not about erasing history but instead understanding the wider context behind it.
'We have been working collaboratively with Waikato-Tainui for more than 12 months on a project to review culturally sensitive place names and sites. We understand this work is vitally important in raising awareness to cultural harm which has taken place.
'What I can say is the Council is absolutely committed to finding an amicable long-term solution for Waikato-Tainui, the Gallagher family and the wider Hamilton community.”
Mayor Paula Southgate agrees now is the right time to discuss the future of the Hamilton statue.
'I know many people – in fact a growing number of people – find the statue personally and culturally offensive. We can't ignore what is happening all over the world and nor should we. At a time when we are trying to build tolerance and understanding between cultures and in the community, I don't think the statue helps us to bridge those gaps.
'While I appreciate the statue was gifted to the city before my time on Council, we need to think about its role and potential location in the city.”
Southgate says Civic Square is not the right place.
'I initially raised my concerns with John Gallagher in November of last year and have spoken to him again recently. He was very understanding and receptive to having this discussion.”
The life-size artwork of Captain Hamilton was created by Margriet Windhausen who is well known in Hamilton for another bronze sculpture, The Farming Family.

'Offensive'
Posted on 12-06-2020 11:49 | By Maryfaith
It has reached the point when anything to do with the New Zealand's colonial heritage will be 'offensive' to some maori radical! A tiny minority of these radicals hold sway over our officialdom - why are we letting this happen ??? They are the racists! All of those being offended are only part Maori - pity they didn't feel so strongly about their western heritage! I am waiting for the westerners and other NZ races to turn around and start destroying maori statues and carvings. Their Tiki and other figure carvings are for the most part - hideous! If we voiced that fact - are we racists?? We have reverse racism in NZ!

Yet we continue to celebrate the terrorist Guy Fawkes. I guess a Bin Laden day is outta the question. It's all a part of history. Can I safely assume there will things removed from museums around NZ as well.

What on earth is going on in New Zealand when we cow tow to a minority day after day Maori are officially only 17% of our current population. This according to the latest census figures. Are we now going to follow the dumbest country in the world right now and tear down statues when this small minority demand it? Why??? Are we all going to follow the lemming like happened over toilet paper? Like Winston Peters said today Grow up and read a book!

Sadly a political party , maori jump up and down , stomp their feet and people apologise for history and bow down to whatever they want, demand. History is history good or bad, the councillors, political parties should not cower in the corner but stand up to the bullying stance taken by the radicals. If statues are vandalised charge them. As a country we are being overtaken by the liberal, sack cloth wearing, bleeding hearts idiots that have no idea how life works in the real world. Councillors around the country stand up to the radicals.
What's next ?

Maybe a good old fashioned book burning. Perhaps learn from history - don't try to alter it to suit the latest trending bandwagon
Outta Control

These Maori radicals are outta control and it's time our PM, our Government, our Councils, our nation stood up to them and quit this absolute stupidity and racism. Maori radicals are costing our country absolute billions of dollars year after year yet they continue to sit with their thumb in their mouth rocking in the corner saying whoa is me. Enough is enough.
