Island ready for Katikati clash

Defending Seeka KI Western BOP titleholders Matakana Island will have their credentials under scrutiny on Saturday when competition leaders Katikati pay a visit to Matakana Island.

The team from the extremities of the Western Bay has carried their Baywide form from last season, into this year's Western Bay competition.

A bonus point (for four tries or better) in four of their five encounters since season start, testify to the impact Katikati have had on the Western Bay championship round.

However, the island team will not surrender without a real fight and could make life difficult for the visitors.

They also possess a genuine match winner in Mate Samuels, who put an indelible mark on last week's encounter against Eastern Districts.

Seven tries in his sides 97-7 victory, tells the story of a genuine finisher who is dangerous every time he has the ball in hand.

However, Katikati have their own points scoring machine in Richie Earl, who posted all his sides points, as they squeezed past Mount Maunganui 32-28 last weekend.

Joint leaders Arataki Black, who relieved Judea of the Hardy Rosebowl (Western BOP challenge trophy) last week, will make their first Rosebowl defence.

The time-honoured Rosebowl will remain with Arataki for at least another week - with Arataki Black playing club mates Arataki Red at Grenada Park.

Mount Maunganui, who will still be hurting at last weekend's narrow loss, will be desperate put their championship aspirations back on track, when they meet Rangataua at Te Waiti Park.

Eastern Districts take on Rangiuru at the Paengaroa Domain, Te Puna should provide Greerton Marist with a good challenge, Papamoa host Te Puke Sports with Judea hosting Tauranga Sports at Maharaia Winiata Park.
