SH2 reopened following serious crash

4.10pm Update: State Highway Two near the intersection of Thompsons Track, Aongatete, has now reopened following a crash this morning.

Police would like to thank motorists for their patience.

The highway was closed following a serious crash between two vehicles around 11.18am.

One person was airlifted to hospital and is in a serious condition. A second person has minor injuries.

1.15pm Update: State Highway Two near the intersection of Thompsons Track, Aongatete, remains closed following a crash that occurred there at 11.18am.

One person has been airlifted by the TECT Rescue Helicopter to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition.

A second person has minor injuries.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area or expect continued delays.

Alternative routes are as follows:

For Southbound Traffic: Use SH2 to Paeroa from Waihi, South on SH26, left onto SH27 at Tatuanui, Left onto SH24 at Matamata, to SH29 Kaimai to Tauranga.

Northbound traffic use Sh29 to Kaimai and follow signs to destination Tauranga local traffic turn left at Wairoa rd onto Crawford rd to Poripori rd and right/left onto SH29 Kaimai. HPMVs use Moffat Rd to SH29 Kaimai.

11.44am Update: Emergency services are responding to a serious crash on SH2, near the intersection of Thompsons Track near Aongatete.

Police were advised of the two-vehicle collision at 11.18am.

Initial indications are that one person is seriously injured. The TECT Rescue helicopter is attending the scene. It is unknown at this stage how many people have been injured.

The road is currently blocked and motorists are asked to avoid the area or expect delays.

Alternative routes are as follows:

11.35am There are reports of a serious crash that has happened on State Highway 2 near Aongatete this morning.

Waka Kotahi NZTA advise that motorists need to follow the direction emergency services at the scene. There are also be traffic delays.

An update will be provided as soon as more information comes to hand.

SOrry for this latest accident - BUT the WHOLE road - Tauranga to Waihi is 35 years behind what is actually required. Try getting out of any side road between Bethlehem and Waihi - especially if you want to turn across the the traffic lane on your side of the road to the other lane!! The traffic volume is such that you are dicing with death every time you do.

When I look at the comments on these sorts of articles, it's always people complaining about the roads/drivers. Why not thank the emergency services who went out there and helped the people involved? On behalf of the quiet optimists, I'd like to say thank you to the professionals that went to this crash. Your efforts are noticed and appreciated.
