Welcome Bay residents are being asked to conserve water following a water main break earlier this week.

Contractors are working to fix the break on Welcome Bay Road, near the intersection of Waitaha Road.

"As the issue is putting pressure on the water supply to Welcome Bay, residents in the area are asked to conserve water where possible," says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.

"Our contractors are working hard to fix the main, however the complexity of the break means work is taking longer than expected.

"It is also impeding our ability to get sufficient supply into reservoir and low pressure may be experienced in both Welcome Bay and Papamoa."

Residents are being asked to conserve water just for today.

"Traffic is being controlled by a stop-go system.

"Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible."
