A heavy rain watch is in force for the Coromandel area.
The MetService is forecasting rain and easterly gales for the upper North Island.
"A deepening low over the Tasman Sea is moving slowly southeastwards, bringing rain and strong or gale easterly winds to the upper North Island during Wednesday and Thursday.
"The biggest rainfall accumulations are expected over Northland,mainly about the eastern hills, and a heavy rain warning is now in force, while a watch has been issued for Coromandel Peninsula and Great Barrier Island.
"In addition to the rain, easterly winds are likely to reach gale force in many places, and watch is now in force for Auckland.
"People are advised to stay up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings."

Valid: 24 hours from 9pm Wednesday to 9pm Thursday
Forecast: Periods of heavy rain. Rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria (eg 80 to 90mm in 24h).
STRONG WIND WATCH
Area: Auckland
Valid: 21 hours from 9pm Wednesday to 6pm Thursday
Forecast: East to northeast winds may approach severe gale at times.
