A Rotorua managed isolation centre went into lockdown on Wednesday after a potential new COVID-19 case was detected.
Government officials confirmed restrictions were imposed at Rydges Rotorua.
'Standard procedures were followed after the detection,” a Managed Isolation and Quarantine spokesperson told Stuff.
'In such cases, when regional isolation and quarantine teams are notified by health staff of a potential or confirmed case, the person is isolated to their room, and all relevant staff are informed."
The spokesperson says the person with the potential case was be given appropriate PPE when trained staff moved them to quarantine accommodation.
'In this instance, all returnees were confined to their rooms while transfer out of the facility was undertaken and a deep clean of communal areas was carried out.”
A woman with a sister in the centre says her sister was 'put into a dirty room” with food remnants, tea stains, a child's toy and other detritus left in the room.
The woman whose relative was staying at the hotel says she's concerned about the facility's cleanliness.
”I've been trying to get hold of somebody in charge of the hotels in Rotorua without success.
'Aside from the health and safety issue, as a taxpayer, am I funding the use of a hotel which would otherwise not be of an acceptable standard to take visitors?
'The person in the room had to request cleaning materials to clean the room properly,” she says in an email to the Director General of Health and the MBIE chief executive.
'Apparently the food's very nice though.”
A Rydges spokeswoman would not discuss any self-isolation or lockdown processes but says the hotel is disappointed to hear a guest was unhappy about the room's condition.
'Each room was cleaned prior to handing the hotel over to the Ministry of Health,” she says.
'The Front of House team call each guest every day to understand any further needs they may have, and will immediately address any concerns raised by guests to ensure they have a comfortable stay.”
Five regions currently have MIQ (managed isolation and quarantine) facilities, Air Commodore Digby Webb said on Wednesday.
The Ministry of Health on Wednesday said two new cases were confirmed.
The first was a man in his 50's who arrived in New Zealand on July 14 from Afghanistan via Dubai.
He was transferred to an Auckland quarantine facility but the ministry did not say where he was transferred from.
The second case was a man in his 40's who arrived on July 27 from the Philippines via Hong Kong.
He was taken straight to an Auckland quarantine facility as he was symptomatic on arrival.
