Welcome Bay power outage under investigation

UPDATE 9.37AM: Powerco says damaged equipment may be the cause of a power outage in the Welcome Bay area.

Power was cut to 71 customers in Welcome Bay at around 7pm.

"Field crews are working to restore power to those impacted as quickly and safely as possible," says a Powerco spokesperson.

"While investigations are continuing into the cause of the outage, early indications show signs of damaged equipment.

"Powerco thanks customers for their patience and understanding."

EARLIER:

A 'major fault” is being blamed for a power outage in the Welcome Bay/Hairini area.

A SunLive reader says they witnessed a power outage following two loud bangs and flashes of white light around 7pm.

The reader reports lines were down at the start of Hairini Street.

Power is reported to still be out in the area this morning.

'The power is still out at mine and in patches in Hairini and Welcome Bay.

'Powerco says it's a major fault with no ETA for restoration.”

Traffic lights were out following the loud bangs.
