The sausage roll has always been a Kiwi classic and now we can find out who has the best in New Zealand.

Entries are now open for the first Bakels Legendary Sausage Roll Competition.

Putting the spotlight on the iconic pastry snack, the opportunity for any bakery, café, lunch bar, or caterer to win the inaugural gold winner prize has risen.

'It's hard to pass a hot, flaky, golden sausage roll,” says NZ Bakels managing director Brent Kersel.

'Kiwis just love them any time of the day! So let's see if we can find the best one in New Zealand and tell our five million where to find it.”

To get the competition rolling, Bakels is looking for a traditional New Zealand sausage roll filled with beef, pork, or lamb.

On Top of becoming a new Kiwi legend, prizes include the Bakels Legendary Sausage Roll trophy and $1500 prize money; Silver $750 and $500 for Bronze.

Entries close on Friday, September 5, with judging day on Wednesday, October 21.

Entry forms can be found at www.nzbakels.co.nz

Kiwi Classic?

I think the French kicked it off but they’re certainly more popular, and better, in the UK. Kiwis spoil them, and the same with pies, by putting a dollop of common tomato ketchup on it. Yuck. Just trying to be different. If you’re going to put something on it at least go for a ballsy Houses of Parliament Sauce.
