Police are pleased with the public response to the change in Covid-19 Alert Levels in the Auckland region and across New Zealand.

Nine checkpoints have been operating since Wednesday afternoon across Auckland's regional boundaries, at the following locations:

Twin Coast Highway/North of Coal Hill Road

Black Swamp Road

Twin Coast Highway/Cames Road

SH1 North of Twin Coats Discovery Highway

Twin Coast Highway/Ryan Road

Mill Road

Kawakawa/Orere Road and Orere/Matingarahi Road.

Mangatawhiri Road/Lyons Road

River Road/Lapwood Road

Police are stopping every vehicle attempting to travel through each checkpoint, and speaking with every driver.

"Our staff have reported that people are generally being compliant and are heeding the restrictions that have been put in place to prevent a re-emergence of COVID-19 in the community," says a police spokesperson.

"Police are taking a friendly but firm approach and those people who have not had valid reason for travel have been turned back.

"These included people who were travelling to visit friends or family, going for a scenic drive, or trying to get to their holiday homes.

"Many people will have experienced significant congestion at checkpoints and around some essential services."

A Katikati resident says they joined the tail at Drury around 2.15pm and passed through checkpoint at 2.45pm.

The Police need to stop taking the friendly approach because look where that's got us!!! Toughen up and start hitting the morons who struggle to understand the rules. Police should have the power to issue an instant on the spot fine of $1,000. On a different note, which is not directly related to this story - is someone going to challenge the legal positioning of this Government. NZ was COVID-19 free and the Government have allowed people to enter this country from known hotspots. I know who I will be suing if I lose my job and house.....the Government. They have a duty of care towards the people in NZ and they are putting us all at risk by allowing the borders to remain open.

You're perfectly right on both those points. The boarder, as you have clearly stated before, should have been closed long ago. Again, as you have stated, Winston Peter's gave people more than ample warning. This Government needs to quit trying to be airy fairy PC nice and give Police the authority to enforce what the entire world is aware of. These ones that are choosing to ignore things are doing so by choice and arrogance not ignorance. Police need to be enforcing not educating.
