Narrow win for Mount Maunganui

In spite of the opposition touching down three tries to one, Mount Maunganui grabbed a narrow 25-19 PGG Wrightson Baywide Premier victory over Rotoiti at the weekend - courtesy of twenty points from the boot of Mount first five Matt Golding.

Matt opened the scoring with his first penalty goal, before Rotoiti's flying winger Manasana Bole waltzed around the Mount Maunganui defence to score under the posts.

Two further penalty kicks saw the home side take a narrow 9-7 advantage into the half time break.

Just a minute into the second spell, the visitors to Blake Park hit the lead when Luke Cassidy crashed over for Rotoiti's second touchdown, to lead 12-9.

Three further penalties from Matt, gave the advantage back to Mount Maunganui before Mount halfback Scott Bradley, finished off a Mount attack to score out wide. With the clock ticking down Rotoiti stormed the try line, with Manasana Bole picking up his second touchdown of the match.

Mount Maunganui's hard fought victory, moves them into the top four for the first time this season albeit alongside Opotiki, Rotoiti and Te Puna.

Te Puna stormed back into championship contention, when they won a high scoring affair in Rotorua, defeating Whakarewarewa 42-32. Te Puna ran in five tries, with the icing on the cake the 17 points slotted by Te Aihi Toma.

The Te Puna touchdowns were awarded to Whanahou Peita, Teroia Kuka, Heywood Kuka, Tapene Mika, and Marty Stevenson - with the Whaka bonus point coming from the four tries grabbed by Courtney Mika, Trent Sweeney, John Ririnui and Theo Heta.

Mount Maunganui was made to fight all the way before posting a 25-17 victory. Greerton Marist had little trouble cementing second place with a 90-3 win over cellar dwellers Kahukura.
