Eastern Districts shake up Katikati

At home on a sunny afternoon with large crowd watching, Katikati had every right to think they would be able to put away the struggling Eastern Districts side away early, and work hard on improving their points differential.

ED turned up with a different plan and were first to score. Katikati gave away the chance of slotting several early shots at goal instead choosing to take the lineout hard on attack.

The ED defence was absolute and held out everything their much higher ranked opponents could throw at them.

Half time had Katikati up by a solitary point 10 to nine. A large group of Eastern Districts supporters had travelled across the Western Bay and gave their team a huge lift.

However after 15 minutes in the second half Katikati scored 4 unanswered tries and won the game comfortably 43 to 14.

Mararmatanga Park was the venue for two matches in the Seeka Western Bay competition, with the home side taking on Arataki Black as well as Matakana Island taking on Arataki Red, in what was a festival of rugby.

Arataki Black had the Hardy Rosebowl on the line but proved too strong for Te Puna running out 69 to 11 winners.

Matakana, fresh off their victory over, then, competition leaders Katikati ran away with a 49 to seven win over Arataki Red making a sure statement that they will be there come final's time.

The upset of the week would have to have been Greerton Marist victory over Judea. On a day when Greerton had all three of their teams take victories at home. Greerton won the hard fought battle over Judea 22 to 7.

In other results Mount Maunganui proved too strong for neighbours Papamoa winning 33 to 7. Tauranga Sports ran up 65 points against the struggling Rangataua to win 65 to 0, while Rangiuru were too strong for Te Puke.
