The man who died following a water incident at Waihi Beach has been named.

Jung Nam Shin of Auckland was found unresponsive in the water at 1.35pm on Monday.

At the time of the incident a police spokesperson said he was brought ashore and CPR was performed.

"Sadly the person has died at the scene."

Jung Nam Shin was 76.

"Police extend their sympathies to his family and friends," says a police spokesperson.

His death will be referred to the Coroner.
