Residents in the Arataki area are being urged to stay alert and lock their vehicles following a spate of break-ins over the weekend.

Police received five reports of vehicles break-ins on Carysfort Street, Leander Street, Paterson Street and Taupo Ave in Mount Maunganui on Sunday night.

They are also making enquiries into a burglary on nearby Hawea Street last Saturday where electronics were taken from an address.

A police spokesperson says the property burglary is not believed to be related to the series of vehicle break-ins. But they say these vehicle break-ins may be linked to one another.

A Leander St resident, who has requested to remain anonymous, says her vehicle was broken into at around 10pm last Sunday.

The left rear-triangle window of her car was smashed, but luckily there was nothing inside the vehicle to be stolen.

"I bought my car a couple of weeks ago and haven't put anything in it yet so nothing was stolen, thank goodness. They sure did try though."

She believes the car break-ins in the area are on the rise, saying "heaps" of people are reaching out to her on social media with similar experiences to her own.

"The posts I have made on a couple of the buy and sell Facebook pages have had heaps of people come forward and say that it has happened to them as well."

She says she's gutted her almost-new car has already been damaged.

A police spokesperson says forensic inquiries have been completed in relation to the car break-ins, and at this stage, there are no further lines of inquiry.

"Police would remind anyone who is the victim of incidents such as these to notify us, and to call 111 if you notice people acting suspiciously around vehicles or property."

Residents should always lock their car, motorbike, bicycle and other vehicles, says the spokesperson.

'A car alarm, steering lock, or good quality chains are extra deterrents too. Ideally, keep all vehicles in a garage or out of sight.”

The woman who had electronic belongings stolen from a property on Hawea Street last Saturday says she has 'literally just been left with her clothes”.

Items stolen include a Sony camera, apple MacBook laptop, iPhone and purse.

The woman says she understands it's a long shot to find her electronics, but it's the memories that have caused heartbreak.

'It's not just the phone, the computer contents, or the photos on the camera but the fact they are all linked. I always back everything up but unfortunately, they took everything,” she says.

'They can keep it all I just wish I had the memory card and hard-drive with my memories back.”
