The body of the teenager who drowned at a Waikato lake has been recovered.
The 18-year-old was swimming in Lake Arapuni about 8.25pm on Tuesday when he got into difficulty.
A police spokesperson says a search was initiated that same night, however, the man was not located.
'The Police National Dive Squad conducted a search on Wednesday and the body was recovered this afternoon."
A couple of other men had tried to keep the teen afloat, but were unsuccessful.
Senior Sergeant Murray Hamilton says he man had disappeared underwater and was presumed drowned. The death will be referred to the coroner.
The drowning comes a day after a 4-year-old girl died at Lake Rotokawau in Rotorua.
Emergency services also responded to another drowning at Lake Puketi, North Waikato, about 11am on Wednesday. That person's death has been referred to the coroner.

A sad reminder...

...that we all need water skills to live here. Not clear whether the person concerned had some kind of medical emergency, but if 2 others couldn't keep him afloat, it is even sadder. We all need to have the basic drownproofing skills and know how to help someone who is drowning. You can "do your best" and it is commendable, but even basic skills will give better outcomes. Schools USED to teach it, but then it got too expensive to keep a school pool, so the onus is now on the students to learn water skills elsewhere. There should be grants for doing so.
