EARLIER: Reports are coming in of gridlock traffic around Tauranga this afternoon.

SunLive has received multiple reports of traffic stalled on Hewletts Road, Maunganui Road and State Highway 29a.

The delays are believed to be a result from a truck rollover in Mount Maunganui, at the intersection of Hewletts Road and Totara Street.

Police were alerted to the crash just before 11.30am, says a police spokesperson.

'While the road is currently not blocked, the truck and trailer will need to be removed from the area.

'This is expected to take some time and the road will have to be closed when this happens.

"Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible."

Why is crash at 11:3 but road still closed at 3:30pm? Keystone cops don’t care?

Even getting out of Bayfair carpark is a mission. We left not knowing about the traffic jam but realised trucks were lined up under the Hewlets Rd flyover and going nowhere so we changed lanes and headed for the mount and actually got out of 1st gear, turned on Oceanbeach rd and headed for Papamoa to get home to Pyes Pa via Welcome Bay Rd. Glad we hadn't hired a taxi...
