Red cards dominate torrid game

The two teams that have both dropped out of Division One in previous years met in a clash of the titans game at Arataki Park at the weekend.

In first position and unbeaten, Arataki Black met Katikati, who had only lost one game this season.

Both teams determined to regain their Division One status for next season were not going to hold anything back.

Arataki were first to score with an early penalty before a dominant forward movement had the visitors roll down field for the opening try.

Arataki were awarded another penalty before Katikati scored two more tries. The Katikati forwards were able to disrupt the home side's ball for most of the game and stop the free running home backs from making much head way.

With five minutes to go the Katikati first five-eight drop kicked a goal, which bounced off the upright and into the hands of the Katikati winger, who was following up the kick. Katikati scored and converted the try to take out the clash.

Both sides will be reviewing their playing numbers for next week after three red and two yellow cards were dished out during a torrid game.

Matakana Island travelled to Tauranga Domain for a must win clash with Tauranga Sports.

The home side took advantage of several early penalties to put two early tries on their visitors.

The island team only had themselves to blame for a high penalty count and the eventual loss to a well disciplined and fit Tauranga Sports side. Tauranga Sports winning 22 to 7.

Mount Maunganui gave away their home ground advantage to travel to Te Puke and be part of the Rangiuru new ground opening.

They must have wondered if that was a good move when Rangiuru turned up to play. The visitors narrowly won the game by a single try finishing with the Mount on 15 to Rangiuru 10.

Te Puna at home was too strong for Rangataua giving the visitors to Maramatanga Park a rugby lesson ending with Te Puna 42, Rangataua 5.

Other results had Te Puke Sports narrowly beating Eastern Districts in a nail-biter at Murray Salt Stadium on Friday night. Papamoa beat Judea at home to hold their place as fourth placed club side. Greerton Marist had a bye after the withdrawal of Arataki Red earlier in the week.
