New tracks for TECT Park

Tauranga's mountain bike scene is about to get bigger with the addition of 80kilometres of new mountain bike tracks at TECT All Terrain Park.

The new tracks are being built with a $24,000 digger granted to Mountainbike Tauranga from Bay Trust and is expected to drive sporting talent currently travelling to Rotorua to ride back into Tauranga.

Mountainbike Tauranga representatives met with Bay Trust on Tuesday to show them the new digger and their plans for the park.

Mountainbike Tauranga TECT Park coordinator Marty Robinson says the new tracks will drive more community events and talent to the Bay of Plenty.

'Mountain biking in Tauranga has a few small different places you can go but the TECT All Terrain Park is a huge opportunity to get in and create a really decent sized mountain bike park for the Western Bay of Plenty area.”

Up until now, the closest large-scale mountain biking facility has been in Rotorua.

'Once we have got a few more tracks in, it will mean there will be a facility similar to Rotorua but only half the distance away.”

Mountainbike Tauranga applied for the funding from Bay Trust to build mountain biking, horse and dog sledding tracks.

Currently there is about 20km of track at TECT Park but developers have plans for another 80km.

Marty says mountain biking is 'huge” in Tauranga and is one of the fastest growing leisure sports in New Zealand.

He says it is exciting to be involved the sport's local development.

'It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to be able to be involved in developing the park and Bay Trust have really supported Mountainbike Tauranga in that process, we are looking forward to getting into it.”
