Whakatane school loses eight classrooms in fire

Apanui School in Whakatane has lost a complete block of classrooms due to a fire last night.

Four crews were called to the fire at Apanui School on McAlister Street at 2am, where the two-storey building was well alight.

The school posted this morning to their Facebook page, saying "We have lost all of A Block (our biggest block by the field) eight classrooms, toilets, temporary staffroom and the leaky building repairs."

Over 40 firefighters attended the scene, and crews remain on site this morning dampening down any hotspots.

No one was injured in the fire.

The school's adminstration 'A' Block was undergoing renovation which was due to be completed by the end of February. The 200 students enrolled at the school are due to classes on Tuesday.

A fire investigator is at the scene.
