Baywide contest heating up

There are no guarantees as the PGG Wrightson Baywide premier rugby competition reaches the business end of the season.

This time last year, the talk around the water cooler was all about who Tauranga Sports would meet in the premier final.

However, they fell at the semi-final hurdle to a fired up Whakarearewa side.

The following week, all the talk was about how much Whaka would beat Te Puke by in the final.

But Whaka were out-done by a spirited Te Puke side, which had gone undefeated until last week's 26-21 loss to Tauranga.

With seven rounds to go before the semi-finals, no team is taking anything for granted.

Te Puke has 47 points and lead the division, but they are due to take on Greerton Marist, and as Opotiki will contest, Greerton doesn't look to do anyone favours at Greerton Park.

They are even more dangerous after being taught a lesson by Whaka last weekend, going down 32-10.

What made things worse for Greerton was they were kept scoreless in the second half.

Greerton coach Kane Parker says his side struggled to lift themselves up after the Opotiki match and have taken a lot from the loss to Whaka.

It will be the battle of the bridge on Saturday, with Mount Maunganui hosting Tauranga Sports at Blake Park.

It's fair to say the Mount have struggled in the last few weeks, but showed signs last week in a 22-36 loss to Te Puna that the side are not far from turning their slump around.

The game of the round could be the match-up between Rotoiti and Te Puna in Rotoiti.

The lakesiders have been a breath of fresh air this season, stacked full of youngsters, who are keen to impress their coach Wayne Ormond.

This could be a turning point for Rotoiti - beating Te Puna, who has been one of the most consistent teams in the competition, could build the momentum and belief that this young side is the real deal.

Talking about momentum, Whaka will be hoping to build their own, when they play their local derby match against Waikite. Waikite are struggling this season and are looking relegation straight in the face.

However, the black and yellows always lift against Whaka, especially at home.

Rangataua have a huge battle on their hands this weekend as they take on Opotiki, who are currently like a freight train - charging through the bottom half of the premier table with no breaks and its throttle wide open.

Division one is equally exciting as Rangiuru lead the competition with two charging bulls hard on its tail.

Paroa had a comfortable win over Ruatoki last weekend but come up against stiffer competition in the form of Marist St Michael's.

The Rotorua side will travel to the outskirts of Whakatane, confident after beating neighbours Ngongotaha 22-19.

Kahukura have been impressive in peeling off seven wins on the trot and should prove too strong for Te Teko.

Whakatane Marist will be looking to get back in the winning habit when it hosts Poroporo at Rugby Park. Ngongotaha should be too strong for Reporoa, while Ruatoki will be cannon fodder for division one leaders Rangiuru in Te Puke.

All premier and division one games kick-off at 2.45pm.
