UPDATED 08:43pm: State Highway 30 is now open in both directions following a serious crash earlier today.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency have now confirmed the road has opened following a crash involving a car and a truck.

NZTA had previously advised people to avoid the area near Te Puakanga Road in Rotoiti, between Tikitere and Rotoma, if possible, or to be prepared for a detour.

EARLIER: Police are responding to a serious crash between a car and a truck on State Highway 30.

The crash occurred near the Hinehopu Golf Club about 4.10pm, says a statement from police.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising a serious incident has been reported to emergency services near Te Puakanga Road.

Rotorua Now is working to get more information and will update the story when possible.
