Motorists travelling along State Highway 29 are being warning to drive with care following a molasses spill.
A truck carrying molasses hit a bridge near Omanawa Road just after 11.30am.
About 11,000 litres of the sticky substances spilled onto the road as a result of the crash.
No were no injuries reported.
A Bay of Plenty Regional Council environmental first responder staff was on-site confirmed some molasses discharged into the Omanawa River, which has since been contained and contractors are conducting a clean-up.
"Molasses is a thick syrup made from crushed sugar cane or sugar beets that is commonly used as a sweetener. If you find, see or smell pollution, please call our 24/7 Hotline on 0800 884 883," says a post on Facebook.
The road was closed for several hours while the spill was cleared
NZTA reports the road is slippery and SH29 has speed reductions of 30km posted in this area.
