Merv Scholes trophy kicks off today

The short, sharp Merv Scholes competition in the Seeka KI Western BOP Rugby season will occupy the four teams until they go on to fulfil there respective Baywide obligations.

Katikati and Arataki will represent the Western Bay in the Baywide Division Two playoffs, with Tauranga Sports and Mount Maunganui contesting the Baywide Senior Reserve competition.

All four Baywide contenders qualified to meet their Eastern Bay and Rotorua rivals, by way of a top two finish, in their respective Western Bay championship categories.

A rematch of last week's Seeka KI Western BOP championship final will take place at Moore Park in Katikati, where the home side will square off against Tauranga Sports for the second successive week.

Katikati lifted aloft the Combined Cup in triumph after defeating Tauranga Sports 24-19 in a game where the lead changed hands on a number of occasions.

Bragging rights are always on the line whenever Mount Maunganui and Arataki meet during the season.

The two near-neighbours enjoy a fierce rivalry on the field with little quarter shown or given in their match-ups. Revenge will be on the mind of Mount Maunganui after tasting defeat by a solitary point a few weeks ago, with Arataki Black posting a 20-19 victory.

Greerton Marist made an emphatic statement in the opening round of the Phelan Cup, winning a high scoring contest 40-24 against Rangataua.

This weekend it should post a second successive win, when it hosts Eastern Districts at Greerton Park. Papamoa, which posted 30 unanswered points against ED last week, could have a good battle with Rangataua at Rangataua headquarters.

Judea will host Matakana Island, which will be desperate to put their first points of the second competition on the board after tasting defeat to Rangiuru last week.

Te Puna and Rangiuru should have a good tussle in one of the early games at Maramatanga Park.
