Fire trucks are in attendance at a scrub fire at Mount Maunganui.

Fire Emergency NZ shift manager Colin Underdown says they were alerted to the scrub fire off Russley Drive at 11.31am.

'The scrub fire is 70 by 4 metres,” says Colin.

'There are three appliances in attendance from the Mount Maunganui and Tauranga fire stations, with two pumps and two hose reels.”

Shoppers at the nearby retail stores in Owens Place saw large billowing smoke coming from the Bayfair Reserve behind the stores.

The cause of the scrub fire is unknown at this stage.
