Live updates: Waikato wakes at alert level 3

More of Waikato has woken today to find itself back under Covid-19 alert level 3 restrictions.

From midnight, Waipa, Waitomo, and Ōtorohanga districts joined Hamilton, Raglan and other towns in level 3.

There were five new confirmed Covid-19 cases in Waikato yesterday.

Waipa Mayor Jim Mylchreest says the restrictions are a necessary blow to the economy.

The number access points in and out of the area make it really difficult to police the boundary, Mylchreest says.

People will have to follow the rules and restrict their travel or the virus could spread far and wide, he warns.

Tauranga could be next...

We are obviously very close to Waikato and my sympathies go out to the people who have had to be included in the extended boundaries for Covid. It is pretty easy for a single person to bring the virus into Tauranga and we should be prepared for it. Hopefully, as vaccination levels increase and people comply with the restrictions, we will see the cases decline and the restrictions eased.
