PM: Katikati case returns a negative second result

The person who tested positive for Covid-19 in Katikati over the weekend has now returned a negative test.

Speaking to Breakfast, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says she was advised overnight that the person who travelled to Katikati from Auckland, had tested negative on their second test, and so had all their family members.

The person had a high CT value and was tested again following their initial positive result last week.

"So that's good news to receive today," says Ardern.

Vaccinations ramps up in Katikati

Speaking from Katikati, Western Bay of Plenty Mayor Garry Webber told TVNZ's Breakfast it was a "bugger of a situation" to have in a community like theirs after a case popped up from Auckland.

"It's disappointing."

He says the person involved had been a diligent app scanner and had done everything right.

They're trying to get as many people vaccinated as they can, and there's a pop-up testing centre in place for anyone with symptoms.

So to report it fully she has had 5 negative tests then "one positive" and now another negative. At what cycle is the health ministry running these test ?

I feel your comment. I guess we can only be "better to be safe than sorry". But I too worry about some of the testing we are seeing. My initial reaction to this article was one of relief, but then I realized that is not appropriate. There could be other people who didn't behave as properly as this one did, and really, until the whole country is at level 1, we can't afford to relax. Still, good news for Tauranga, though...
