Te Puke unbeaten in tournament

The last day of the Tai Mitchell qualifying rounds, saw Te Puke finish as the only unbeaten side.

In the first game of the morning, the home team had to overcome a spirited first half performance from Opotiki, with Te Puke taking a narrow 14 nil advantage into the half time break.

However Te Puke cut loose in the second spell to post a 61 nil victory.

Tauranga West finished the qualifying rounds in second place, with a 46 nil win over Whakatane, after leading by 19 points at the half way stage.

Fellow Western Bay team Tauranga East cruised into the semi-finals with a 73 nil win against Rangitaiki.

The two Rotorua sides both posted wins on day four, but not before receiving stern challenges from their opponents.

Rotorua Gold got home 21-5 in the match-up with Apanui while Rotorua Maroon overcame a game Galatea in a high scoring encounter 52-22.

The draw for the Tai Mitchell championship semi-finals sees Te Puke meet Rotorua Maroon, with a Western Bay local derby with Tauranga West squaring off against Tauranga East.
