Bonus win in Baywide title race

While Te Puke Sports and Tauranga Sports re-inked their credentials at the top of the PGG Wrightson Baywide premier standing, the bonus point victories came in completely contrasting circumstances.

Defending Baywide champions Te Puke Sports, were in involved in a close contest with Rotoiti, throughout the eighty minutes of rugby at Murray Salt Stadium in Te Puke.

Te Puke had a 10-3 lead at the half way stage of the match, which they extended to a 14 point advantage.

However the Rotoiti side charged back into the game to tie up the encounter at 17 all, before Te Puke grabbed their fourth touchdown of the match, to post a 24-17 win.

Gideon Uelese grabbed two of the Te Puke four tries, with Simon Rolleston and John Corbett being awarded a touchdown apiece.

Baywide rugby followers were struggling to remember a bigger premier score line, after Tauranga Sports ran over Waikite 118 nil at the Tauranga Domain.

While the Rotorua visitors never gave up the chase, they were simply out gunned by the home side, who spun the ball wide at every opportunity.

Tauranga halfback Lewis Hancock brought up his 100 hundred points for the season with four tries, while Johan Mientjies and Nick Thompson grabbed three touchdowns apiece. Another to post a significant milestone in the encounter was Nick Evemy who took his season tally to 143, with two tries and eight conversions.

Whakarewarewa kept their playoff chances alive, with a hard fought win against Opotiki 20-18 in the Sulphur City.

Whaka made the early running with Chanse Ritete-Perham and Tofu Pomale running in first half touchdowns.

The try awarded to Ritete-Perham was a beauty, with the talented youngster involved in the build-up on several occasions, before dotting the ball down under the crossbar.

Opotiki grabbed a one point lead in the second spell, before Maurice Stone calmly slotted a penalty goal to clinch the match for the home side Te Puna's high scoring 38 all draw, with Greerton Marist at Greerton headquarters, ensured that both sides made progress on the point's ladder.

Te Puna moved to within one point of the top four, while Greerton took a significant step to avoiding relegation at the end of the season. Mount Maunganui won a relatively even contest against Rangataua, before running in two late touchdowns to post a 37-23 victory.

Te Teko, who were desperate to get their Division One playoff hopes back on track, had a battle of attrition in the local Eastern Bay derby, with second placed Paroa at Dunderdale Park.

The 17 all draw reflected a game of real intencity, with neither side able to assert any real authority in the encounter.

Ruatoki belied their place at the bottom of the standings, when they led Whakatane Marist for much of the contest, before the Marist side got home 24-21.
