Tauranga go head to head with Katikati

The Merv Scholes Trophy replay, of last week's Seeka KI Western BOP championship, took place at Moore Park at Katikati on Saturday.

For the second week in a row Katikati and Tauranga Sports went head to head in combat.

In a reversal of the previous week's Western Bay championship, the Tauranga side received some consolation for losing the title decider, grabbing a 19-5 victory at Moore Park in Katikati.

The three tries to one Tauranga Sports victory, gave both sides a solid workout before their respective Baywide playoff games in three weeks time.

The other Scholes trophy game was the expected battle of attrition between Mount Maunganui and Arataki.

The visitors to Blake Park appeared to have the game in the bag, holding a one-point advantage with just a minute left in the encounter.

However in the last throw of the dice, the Mount attack on the line was rewarded with a touchdown, which was converted from the sideline to give Mount Maunganui a 23-17 victory.

Rangiuru continued their second half of the season renaissance against Te Puna at Maramatanga Park.

The Rangiuru 26-15 win has propelled the Te Puke based side into a share of the lead.

The Rangiuru remarkable turn around in fortunes, comes from a team that posted just two wins in the Western Bay championship.

Papamoa had to withstand an extremely spirited challenge from Rangataua, to keep their second round unbeaten record intact.

The Papamoa 20-15 win reflected a spirited contest that went down to the wire.

Greerton Marist joined Rangiuru and Papamoa at the top of the standings, when they defeated Eastern Districts 31-5, in one of the early games at Greerton Park.

The Greerton side are another team that has turned their season around after a slow start. Matakana Island bounced back after their first round loss to Rangiuru, when they got past Judea 31-15 at Judea HQ.
