Wet conditions no problems on day five

Wet conditions on day five of the Tai Mitchell tournament in Te Puke, didn't deter the leading contenders, with the two sides that will fight out the 2012 Tai Mitchell Final adapting to play winning wet weather rugby.

Te Puke continued their unbeaten run to make the final stanza with a convincing 37-7 win, over the defending Tai Mitchell champions Rotorua Maroon.


The home side had the encounter in the bag at the half way stage, taking a 27-7 advantage into half time the break.

The home side will face Tauranga West in the final, after they accounted for Tauranga East in the race to make the title decider.

While the final score of 24-10 suggested a dominant performance from the West side, the game was up for grabs for much of the contest.

Tauranga West took a narrow 10-5 lead into half time, with East scoring after the resumption in play to level the scores.

In other day five playoffs, Opotiki had a good battle with Rangitaiki before posting a 12-5 victory, with Rotorua Gold sneaking home from Galatea 14-12 after the Rotorua side scored a converted try in the last play of the game.

Day Six Draw – Wednesday July 4, 2012

12.15pm – Tai Mitchell Final: Te Puke v Tauranga East

10.45an – Playoff for Third Place Tauranga East v Rotorua Maroon

10.45am – Playoff for Fifth Place: Opotiki v Rotorua Gold

9.30am – Playoff for Seventh Place: Rangitaiki v Galatea

9.30am – Playoff for Ninth Place: Whakatane v Apanui
