Testing for Covid-19 is underway at the Ocean Shores retirement village in Mount Maunganui after it emerged a visitor on the site has recently returned a positive Covid-19 test result.

The visitor, a worker at Tauranga Hospital, is reported by 1News to be a son who has been staying with his mother on the facility.

The village is owned by the Arvida group, having only acquired it from Arena Living a week ago. Arvida CEO Jeremy Nicoll says he first became aware of the exposure event around lunchtime.

He has confirmed to SunLive that the parent of the positive case was tested this morning and is now self-isolating on-site at their villa. The resident is currently asymptomatic.

The relative has been moved to a managed isolation facility in Rotorua.

Jeremy says discussions are now underway with Public Health about mobile testing at the site.

'The focus today has been communication, working with the residents on-site and also doing our own contact tracing as well so we know where the people have been,” says Jeremy.

Jeremy says the resident is single vaccinated whilst the relative who has tested positive is double vaccinated.

'Hopefully the double vaccination will reduce the transmissibility of the virus,” says Jeremy.

'However, they were in close proximity," he states.

The Ministry of Health confirms a known Covid-19 case has been visiting a residence at the location.

'There are a very small number of contacts identified from the visit,” says a MOH spokesperson.

'Contacts are being tested, with results expected overnight.

'This situation will be closely managed by the public health unit.”
