Unbeaten runs in Phelan Cup

Papamoa and Rangiuru, who remain the only two unbeaten teams in the Seeka KI Western BOP Phelan Cup competition, posted wins in completely contrasting circumstances at the weekend.

Papamoa continued their winning streak in the Western Bay second round competition, with a big win against Te Puna.

The home side was competitive for the first half, before Papamoa cut loose in the second spell, to post a 52-14 victory.

Rangiuru sat on the sidelines when Rangataua defaulted the first game at Centennial Park.

Matakana Island got back in contention for the Phelan Cup with a hard fought 22-18 win against Greerton Marist and Judea ran over Eastern Districts 75-5 at Judea headquarters.

In the Merv Scholes trophy competition Tauranga Sports posted a big win over archrivals Mount Maunganui 50-5, while Katikati got past Arataki 18-5 at Moore Park in Katikati.

Two Western Bay of Plenty Rugby Sub-Union challenge trophies changed hands on the weekend. Rangataua, bounced back from big loss to Tauranga Sports in the first half of the season, to gain revenge and grab the Jordan Cup in a Baywide premier game. Rangataua came from 7-3 down at the break to post a 14-12 win.

Tauranga Sports Colts beat long time rivals Mount Maunganui to claim the Oliver Cup. Mount Maunganui entered the Baywide age group competition game with just a single loss on their season ledger card. However Tauranga Sports took control to post a 19-5 victory.

The Hardy Rosebowl, which is the third piece of Western Bay challenge trophy silverware, changed hands the previous weekend.

Tauranga Sports reversed the Western Bay Championship loss to Katikati, with a 19-5 win to take home the Hardy Rosebowl. They will take the Western Bay challenge prize into next weekend's game with Arataki after defeating Mount Maunganui on Saturday.
