Police have released the name of the man who died following a crash on State Highway 1, in the Bay of Plenty Police District.

The crash involved a pedestrian and truck on SH1, just north of Tūrangi at about 9.45pm on Sunday.

The road, which is geographically in the Waikato, but part of the Bay of Plenty Police's District, was closed for several hours to allow the serious crash unit time to investigate the scene.

A police spokesperson says Shannon Joseph Wheoki, 31, of Tūrangi, died following the crash.

"Police extend their condolences to his whānau and friends at this difficult time.

"Enquiries into this incident are ongoing."

Shannon's death has been referred to the Coroner.
