MetService are forecasting a fine day that will be significantly hot during the afternoon with light winds and sea breezes.

It's a one-clothing-layer day with an expected high of 30 degrees, and an overnight low of 18 degrees. Low tide is at 12.19pm and high tide at 6.31pm. Sunset is at 8.40pm.

Because of the significant heat today Metservice is advising people to drink plenty of water, stay out of the sun and avoid extreme physical exertion.

Remember to slip, slop, slap and wrap today if you're heading out and about to enjoy the first day of 2022.

What's on today?

The Black Caps face off with Bangladesh's Tigers at the Bay Oval today, on day one of the five day cricket test.

The match starts at 11am and is one of three matches the World Test Champion Black Caps will play in their title defence.
