Three teams chase two spots

With Te Puke Sports and Tauranga Sports having already booked semi-final berths in the PGG Wrightson Baywide Premier title race, the remaining two spots will be fought out between Opotiki, Rotoiti and Te Puna, who are separated by just a solitary point.

While Te Puna will be expected to improve their place on the standings when they play relegation bound Waikite in Rotorua – the two other contenders have away trips to the Western Bay of Plenty on Saturday on their agenda.

Tauranga Sports will host Rotoiti at the Tauranga Domain with Opotiki travelling to Blake Park to face Mount Maunganui.

Rangataua narrowly beat Tauranga Sports last weekend and head coach Mike Rogers will have impressed on his side the need to rebound from the loss with a solid victory against Rotoiti.

Rotoiti will also have no lack of motivation to return home with points on their ledger card. One player who could prove a match winner for the Rotorua Lakeside team is Whakataki Cunningham, who can kick the ball through the goal posts with monotonous regularity. Tauranga Sports took out the first round encounter at Emery Park 21-15.

The solid Opotiki forward pack that takes few backward steps could take control of the game against Mount Maunganui at Mount headquarters.

Former Steamer Matt Henwood has been in outstanding form in the Opotiki forward pack and picked up a try against Te Puke last week.

While Opotiki prevailed in their first round meeting at the House of Pain in the Eastern Bay 15-9 – the Mount boast the services of Matt Golding, who provided all his team's points in the May encounter.

Both Greerton Marist and Rangataua moved out of the relegation zone last week by posting victories.

Local pride and bragging rights will be on the line when the two sides square off at Greerton Park.

The Whakarewarewa roller coaster ride continued last week, when they were narrowly beaten by Te Puna at Maramatanga Park.

Things get no easier for the Rotorua side this weekend, when they travel to play competition leaders Te Puke Sports at Murray Salt Stadium.

Division one has an equally intriguing scenario as the top echelon.

Rangiuru and Paroa have already qualified for the top four which will contest post season play - with Kahukura, Ngongotaha, Te Teko and Whakatane Marist still in the hunt for the last two semi-final berths.

The formbook suggests that Whakatane Marist should beat Reporoa and Kahukura will get passed Ruatoki to remain in contention.

Ngongotaha have a tough assignment when they meet division one leader Rangiuru in the Western Bay.

However, the former Baywide heavyweight has been in good form in recent weeks and could trouble the Te Puke based team.

Te Teko will host Marist St Michaels, who in spite of sitting off the pace have caused a couple of upsets during the season.

Paroa will travel just down the road to meet Poroporo in an Eastern Bay local derby.

A top of the table clash will take place in the colts' title race, with Tauranga Sports hosting Te Puna in the curtain raiser at Tauranga Domain.

Last weekend, the Tauranga side caused a minor upset when they provided Mount Maunganui with just their second loss of the season, with Te Puna edging out defending colts champions Te Puke Sports.

Mount Maunganui should rebound from last week's loss when they host Marist St Michaels, with Te Puke Sports at home to Greerton Marist in a must-win game for both sides.

In the colts second section, Opotiki and Ruatoki square off in an Eastern Bay derby, Kahukura host fellow Rotorua side Waikite, with Rotoiti and Whakarewarewa going head to head at Emery Park.
