The man accused of attempted murder following the stabbing of woman has been granted name suppression.

The 49-year-old was arrested and charged in relation to the incident which happened at Motutere, south of Taupō on Sunday.

Area investigations manager Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Rawlinson says the woman was taken to Waikato Hospital in critical condition.

The accused is facing three charges; attempted murder, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and aggravated assault.

Two of the charges come with a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment.

He appeared in Rotorua District Court earlier this week where no pleas were entered in relation to the charges.

He is due to appear before the High Court in Rotorua on February 4.
