Phelan Cup: sudden death

There will be a number of short sharp phone calls from the Phelan Cup pool of death coaches on Saturday afternoon to clarify who has booked a place in the final the following weekend.

With limited weekends available to complete the Seeka KI Western BOP second round competition, two crossover pools - whereby teams from one side of the draw played the sides from the opposing section - was put in place.

The winning action has come from Pool B, where Papamoa and Rangiuru remain unbeaten and Greerton Marist sit with just one loss on their ledger card.

With just the winner of Pool B going through to contest the final, there is a lot at stake for the three Pool B contenders.

While Papamoa lead Pool B by a solitary point from Rangiuru, they need to post a bonus point victory against Matakana Island to guarantee a finals berth.

However, victory is never a given on Matakana Island, with the home side always receiving unconditional support from their large band of supporters.

A Papamoa defeat would open the door for Rangiuru, who on recent form should prove too strong for Eastern Districts, in spite of ED having the home ground advantage.

Greerton Marist can only hope that their two major rivals suffer defeat to have any chance of playing finals rugby.

On the other side of the draw, Matakana Island are in the box seat and even a narrow loss to Papamoa could still propel them into the Seeka KI Western BOP second round title decider.

A Tauranga Sports victory against Arataki in the Merv Scholes Cup competition would give the Tauranga Sports second fifteen the second round top four prize.

Mount Maunganui square off against Katikati, with all four sides bound for their respective Baywide playoffs the following weekend.
