An act of vandalism at a Coromandel radio station has left its owner wondering what someone's motivation would be to do such a thing.

Communication cables at one of Coromandel's CFM radio sites were cut, taking the radio station off air.

Not only was the community station impacted, but the vandals also damaged equipment for the emergency services which is also housed on the site.

'Apologies to Whangamata/Onemana and Opoutere who were impacted by this act of vandalism,” says the station in a post on Facebook.

'At 12.36 Tuesday, someone forcibly entered one of our radio sites by cutting through a chain and cut through cables taking part of our transmission off air.

'Your actions have cost your local radio station thousands of dollars by damaging special cables that are expensive to repair and replace.

'We are a community station that focuses on promoting community events and wonder what motivates people to do such things?

'Also at this site is emergency services equipment and some of this was also damaged. The emergency services teams use communications to help supporting people in need in the community.”

Police have been notified and are investigating the matter.

'Please let me know where we can send the bill for our repairs?”

The radio station has insurance. Cops won't investigate much if at all, they rely on the public to provide tip-offs. Disgruntled ex-employee/supplier/caller?

My first thought was similar to yours; they said something that REALLY upset someone, or it was a disgruntled client or staff member. Insurance may not be clear cut. The Police WILL investigate; it just may be there is insufficient evidence to effect an arrest... Security cameras would be a good idea...
