UPDATE 2.45pm: Matapihi Rail bridge is now open following an earlier incident.

It had earlier been closed to all foot traffic.

Tauranga City Council say the matter has now "been resolved".

EARLIER 1.33pm: The Matapihi Rail bridge in Tauranga is closed to all foot traffic due to an ongoing incident.

Emergency services are on scene, says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.

"Any person wishing to use the bridge pedestrian walkway will need to delay travel or use an alternate route."

"There are three patrol boats in the water," says a witness at the scene.

"They are all facing the bridge."
