Phelan Cup semi-finals await

The season long Seeka KI Western BOP competitions, has just two weekends remaining, before players boots are unlaced for the final time and gear stowed away for the summer break.

On Saturday the semi-finals of the Phelan Cup will be played, with the two victors meeting for the right to hold the time honoured Western Bay trophy aloft in victory, the following weekend.


Papamoa, who have posted an unbeaten record in the Western Bay second round host Te Puna at the Gordon Spratt Reserve, while Rangiuru are at home at Centennial Park in Te Puke against Matakana Island.

Papamoa and Te Puna have met twice (in the last six weeks) with the honours with Papamoa on both occasions.

On the first occasion Papamoa won 31-5 then posted a 52-14 victory just two weeks ago.

Few teams have made such a marked improvement during the season than Rangiuru second fifteen.

The first time that the Te Puke side were set to meet Matakana Island, they failed to front due the lack of player numbers.

A mid-season recruitment drive, has seen the Rangiuru fortunes undergo a marked improvement, witnessed by the team's 36-15 defeat of Matakana Island in the Western Bay second round.

The top four finishers in the Seeka KI Western BOP Championship, begin their respective Baywide playoffs this weekend.

In Division Two, Western Bay number one seed Katikati have the luxury of a home quarterfinal against Murupara at Moore Park, with Arataki travelling to the Eastern Bay to play Edgecumbe.

Tauranga Sports, who annexed the Western BOP Merv Scholes Trophy last weekend, start their pursuit of Baywide Senior Reserve silverware, in an encounter with Whakarewarewa at the Tauranga Domain. Defending Baywide titleholders Mount Maunganui play Whakatane Marist at Rugby Park in Whakatane.

Phelan Cup Semi-Finals: Papamoa v Te Puna Gordon Spratt Reserve (2.45pm) Rangiuru v Matakana Island, Centennial Park.

BOPRU Baywide Division Two: Katikati v Murupara, Moore Park; Edgecumbe v Arataki, Edgecumbe Domain.

Baywide Senior Reserve: Tauranga Sports v Whakarewarewa, Tauranga Domain; Whakatane Marist v Mount Maunganui, Rugby Park.
