No second chances in premier

There is no second chance for the three teams chasing the last two PGG Wrightson Premier playoff spots on Saturday, Te Puna.

Opotiki and Rotoiti enter the last round of the regular season with a semi-final berth awaiting just two of the Baywide contenders.

While Te Puna currently sit in third position, two points clear of Opotiki with a solitary point back to Rotoiti – they face a big challenge to earn points that would propel them into the post section play next weekend.

Standing in their way is defending champions and competition leaders Te Puke who have led the standings throughout the season.

The major impediment to a Te Puna victory is ace Te Puke goal kicker Nick McCashin who showed the damage he can inflict when sides make mistakes, when he banged home a perfect twelve from twelve conversion attempts against Whakarewarewa last weekend.

However Te Puna has home advantage at Maramatanga Park and the match is sure to attract a large band of the vocal Te Puna supporters. The Te Puna club is built upon undying loyalty for the Black and Blue jersey with few wearing the uniform with more pride than long-time team members Aiden Kuka and Daniel Schuster.

Opotiki have no less a test than Te Puna when the Eastern Bay side meet Tauranga Sports in Opotiki. Tauranga Sports, who have already booked a post season berth, are the real heavyweight of the Baywide top echelon, having won the Premier crown on six occasions since 1999.

The Eastern Bay side will take an incredible home ground advantage into the encounter, having lost just two games in the last two seasons, giving the Princess Street Reserve the name of the 'House of Pain” for visiting teams.

While Opotiki have always been known for their uncompromising forward pack, in the last couple of seasons the Wilbore twins of Te Amo and Te Hata, have given the backline a touch of genuine class.

The formbook suggests that Rotoiti could leapfrog the two other contenders when Greerton Marist travels to play the Rotorua contender at Emery Park.

Like Opotiki, the lakesiders make their home ground a virtual fortress, with competition points being as scarce as hen's teeth for visiting teams.

Two teams with fickle season records will square at Puareanga Park in Rotorua when Whakarewarewa host Mount Maunganui.

Both looked like championship contenders in the early rounds, only for inconsistent results to kill off their title aspirations.

Waikite, who will be relegated to Division One next season after finishing last in the top echelon, travel to play Rangataua in the Western Bay.

The Division One title race is a lot clearer, with Te Teko just having to defeat cellar dweller Reporoa to clinch the fourth playoff spot.

Rangiuru and Paroa booked home semi-finals a couple of weeks ago, with the Kahukura match-up with Marist St Michaels likely to decide whether they finish third or fourth in the qualifying competition.

In other Div One games Rangiuru should prove too strong for Whakatane Marist, Poroporo will be expected to beat Ruatoki, with Paroa meeting Ngongotaha in the Eastern Bay.

The Colts home semi-finals are on the line in the last round of the age group championship round robin play. Te Puna who share a narrow lead with Tauranga Sports, should book a home game next week, when they play bottom of the table Marist St Michael.

Mount Maunganui will be favoured to beat Greerton Marist to advance to the post section play, while defending champions Te Puke Sports need to beat Tauranga Sports to guarantee a semi-final berth.

The Colts division two playoffs see Rangataua host Opotiki in the Western Bay with a Rotorua derby between Waikite and Kahukura on the other side of the draw.

The Baywide Division Two and Senior Reserve playoffs kick off, with the top two teams from each of the three regions, having Baywide titles on their agenda.
