Phelan Cup title decider

Papamoa will square off against the Rangiuru second fifteen on Saturday, July 28, in the Seeka KI Western BOP second round title decider, which has the Phelan Cup on the line.

Last Saturday, the two finalists went through to the final game of the Western Bay club season, although the victories were posted in contrasting circumstances.

Papamoa had a real battle with Te Puna, who they had easily beaten on two occasions in the regular season.

Te Puna led 8-7 for most of the second spell, before a Papamoa player crashed over for a try in the last minute of the encounter to grab a 12-8 victory.

Rangiuru despatched Matakana Island 36-11 at Centennial Park to book a finals berth.

The two finalists reflect the old and new in Western Bay rugby.

Rangiuru was established in 1893 and has a long and proud tradition over the intervening years.

Papamoa Rugby Club is the result of the rapid growth of the Western Bay in the last couple of decades and makes its home at Gordon Spratt Reserve in Papamoa.

The four Seeka KI Western BOP competition sides that won their way through to the Baywide playoffs all emerged victorious on Saturday.

Two Western Bay teams are on either side of the Division Two draw, with the prize at stake, being a place in next seasons Division One competition.

Katikati ran riot against Murupara on the weekend winning 82-7 with Arataki scrapping home from Edgecumbe 21-18.

Division Two semi-final action sees Katikati host Edgecumbe, who won through as closest loser, while Arataki will travel to play Kawerau.

Cutthroat rugby takes place in the Baywide Senior Reserve title race, where Tauranga Sports will square off against Mount Maunganui at the Tauranga Domain, for the right to come back to Grand Final Day the following weekend.

Last weekend, Tauranga Sports had a good battle with Rotorua side Whakarewarewa before posting a 29-12 win, while Mount Maunganui defeated Whakatane Marist 52 nil.
