SH2 reopens following car fire

Update: 4.45pm A fire that started in a car and spread to nearby scrub on State Highway 2 in Whakamarama has now been extinguished.

Fire and Emergency NZ shift manager Colin Underdown says one car was fully involved when fire fighters reached the scene on the corner of Plummers Point Road and SH2.

"The Omokoroa Voluntary Fire Brigade responded wtih their truck," says Colin. "The fire spread up onto the bank so grass was also involved.

"The crew used one high pressure delivery to prevent spread of the scrub fire.

"We've just finished up there now. The fire is extinguished and traffic starting to move again."

Traffic built up in both directions on SH2 waiting while the fire was extinguished.

It is unknown at this stage how the fire was started.

Earlier, 4.30pm A SunLive reader reports that there is a car on fire on State Highway 2 near Whakamarama.

"[It's] just past Gull at Whakamarama. Traffic is backed up both ways," says a SunLive reader.

Motorists are advised to delay their travel and take care in the area.
