6.30pm Update: Three people have received moderate injuries following a crash involving a car and a tractor on State Highway 5.

"Police were alerted to a crash involving a car and a tractor shortly after 5pm," says a Police spokesperson.

"Three people are reported to have moderate injuries."

NZTA report that SH5 between Barker Road and Maraeroa Road is closed.

Motorists are advised to delay their journey or allow extra time due to delays.

Earlier, 5.35pm There has been a serious crash near Hamurana on State Highway 5.

"Due to a serious crash, SH5 - Thermal Explorer Highway - is closed between Barker Rd and Maraeroa Rd," says an NZTA spokesperson.

"Consider delaying your journey or allow extra time as delays are to be expected through this area."

At this stage it is unknown if there are any injuries.
