Two Oropi School students have experienced what it's like at the top after becoming principal and deputy principal for the day.

Bennett Horton became principal and Zoe Hickson took on the deputy role.

Principal Andrew King says it was a fabulous experience for the pair.

'It was really good for school culture creating a sense of fun and excitement for the day across the school.”

The two students ensured everyone got a taste of fun and organised a visit from Mr Whippy during lunch.

Nine-year-old Bennet enjoyed the top job and took advantage of his status, getting teacher Shan McGuinness to make him a milo because he 'was her boss”.

'It was very exciting when I got to school and people were cheering for me.”

Bennett and Zoe did classroom visits with their adult counterparts, Andrew and deputy principal Ayn Harris.

'Me and Bennett each got a clipboard, pen and 12 stickers,” says Zoe.

'When we started our classroom walk-throughs, we gave people stickers along the way.

'Once we finished, we had to write a report for all staff with the notes we had taken.”

'I went into my sister Piper's class and told them they could do whatever they want after their work,” says Bennett.

Andrew says the visits are a good learning opportunity for the children and teachers.

'Having them visit classrooms with Ayn Harris and myself was super fun for the teachers, especially to hear what 'kids' thought about what they were observing in the classrooms.

'What was special is that they [Zoe and Bennett] both noticed how happy and engaged in learning everyone was across the school as they observed the quality of teaching and learning in classrooms.”

Bennet was also a bit mischievous in his role.

'I gave my sister Piper detention and she had to write 'I will never be dumb again” until the page was full.”

The pair were treated to a lunch out with Ayn and Andrew.

'My favourite part of being the deputy principal was going out for lunch and having two ice creams in one day,” says nine-year-old Zoe.

The leaders also got the school's opinion on what to name the school's chickens.

'Bennett and I officially named them Greg, Boss Baby, Hazel and Jordy,” says Zoe.

Zoe and Bennett really enjoyed their day in charge of the school.

'It was very fun knowing what it is like to be the deputy principal like Mrs Harris,” says Zoe.

Bennet says: 'It felt nice being the boss.”
