An initiative designed to give Latin dancers a sense of community is gaining momentum.

A group came up with the idea of ‘Tauranga Dance Whanau' T-shirts featuring the work of local artist, Arabella Beaufoy, about six months ago.

'I started learning Latin dance about two years ago and really appreciated the welcome that I got from the more experienced dancers,” says organiser Kazel Law. 'I guess this is my way of returning the favour. I feel a responsibility, now, to pay it forward.”

The idea is to create that sense of pride in the local dance scene and a feeling of belonging.

'The dance floor can be intimidating for beginners, so I wanted to create a culture that a person wearing one of our t-shirts will always be welcoming and approachable. It doesn't matter which dance classes you attend or which style you prefer.”

Kazel has tried most Latin dance styles with all the local schools.

'Some people advised me to stick to one style. I've learnt from each of the different teachers and don't belong to a particular school. I love them all.

'For me, it's not about loyalty, it's just that dancing was an escape for me when I was navigating the end of my marriage. Dance is such a celebration of life. It's a way of connecting with people and making new friends.”

A dance gathering inspired by the initiative was held on Saturday night, May 28. ‘Bachasalkizouk – the party that brings everyone together' combined bachata, salsa, zouk and kizomba.

'At dance parties, there often tends to be a natural and understandable leaning towards the style that the organisers prefer,” says Bachata Sensual Tauranga teacher Paula Molina.

'Obviously, our favourite style is bachata, but we really want to foster inclusiveness at our gatherings.”

The all-inclusive event at Otumoetai Action Centre was planned to attract dancers from all the local dance schools as well as Rotorua and Hamilton dancers.

'We regularly hold socials for our students to try out the bachata moves that we're teaching them,” says Paula. 'But this time, we're going to play music for four different Latin dance styles. 'We just want everyone to have a great time.”

Everyone was welcome to come along and take part in the dance gathering. The event started 8pm on Saturday, May 28, at Otumoetai Action Centre with entry only $10.
