Covid-19: 8,182 national cases, 13 deaths

The Ministry of Health is reporting 8,182 new community cases of Covid-19, 373 current hospitalisations, and 13 deaths.

There are 245 new community cases in Bay of Plenty, and 99 in Lakes. There are seven people in Bay of Plenty hospitals and four in Lakes hospitals, as well as eight people in ICUs across New Zealand.

There are 89 new imported cases. The seven-day rolling average of community case numbers today is 6,893 – last Wednesday, it was 7,308.

Covid-19 deaths

'Today we are sadly reporting the deaths of 13 people with Covid-19 who have died in the past five days,” says a Ministry of Health spokesperson.

These deaths take the total number of publicly reported deaths with Covid-19 to 1,185 and the seven-day rolling average of reported deaths is 14.

'Of the people whose deaths we are reporting today; four were from the Auckland region, two were from Canterbury, and one each from Bay of Plenty, Tairāwhiti, Hawke's Bay, Hutt Valley, Capital and Coast, Nelson Marlborough, and Southern.”

One person was in their 40s, two were in their 70s, five were in their 80s, and five were aged over 90.

Of these people, six were female and seven were male.

'This is a very sad time for whānau and friends and our thoughts and condolences are with them.

Out of respect, we will be making no further comment on these deaths.”

Vaccinations administered in New Zealand

  • Pacific Peoples (percentage of eligible people aged 12+): 282,109 first dose (98.4%); 277,313 second dose (96.7%), 142,011 boosted (of the 18+ population) (59.2% of those eligible)
  • 16 to 17-year-old booster uptake (all ethnicities): 10,777 boosted (11.7% of those eligible)
  • 16 to 17-year-old booster uptake (Māori): 995 boosted (5.9% of those eligible)
  • 16 to 17-year-old booster uptake (Pacific Peoples): 557 boosted (5.9% of those eligible)
  • 5 to 11-year-olds all ethnicities: 259,894 first dose (54.6%); 121,450 second dose (25.5%)
  • 5 to 11-year-olds - Māori: 41,012 first dose (35.5%); 14,117 second dose (12.2%)
  • 5 to 11-year-olds - Pacific Peoples: 23,698 first dose (48%); 7,452 second dose (15.1%)

Note that the number for 'People vaccinated” differs slightly from 'Vaccines administered” as it includes those that have been vaccinated overseas.

Please note, the Ministry of Health's daily reported cases may differ slightly from those reported at a DHB or local public health unit level. This is because of different reporting cut off times and the assignment of cases between regions, for example when a case is tested outside their usual region of residence. Total numbers will always be the formal daily case tally as reported to the WHO.
