There will be a full closure of Mauao next week, from 5am Wednesday, June 8, until 5pm Thursday, June 9, 2022.
Regular users of Mauao can expect to see some changes happening to the maunga (mountain) this month.
Unknown to many, the Te Ara Motukauri track (4WD track) was once home to early tangata whenua. This site, situated on the Pilot Bay side of Mauao, is called Te Uru Karaka, and is a historic Pā site.
In order for these works to take place and to maintain public safety, a closure of the maunga is needed.
Tauranga City Council notes that the work is weather dependent and is subject to change.

"Ownership" was returned to local iwi by the Crown, but there were agreed conditions. Access must be free, iwi can't build a restaurant on the top with skyway access, for example... In return, the cost of normal maintenance of the tracks and access will be carried out by the Crown & Local Administration. Mauao is considered a national heritage by the Crown and is considered tapu by most iwi. If charges were made to walk it (user pays access) that would be disrespectful, and the current arrangement is the best for all parties. All (and especially Non-iwi...) who use it should treat it with the respect it deserves (don't vandalize, graffiti, or deface it) and be glad we have such a beautiful landmark on our doorstep.

Normally, I'd agree, but, for the reasons outlined in my response to Caveman, I believe this is an exception. Besides, an agreement was made and agreed to by ALL parties.

Great explanation thank you. If that is the arrangement then rightfully so be it. I do not agree in your comment however that 'non iwi especially' should treat it with due respect. ALL persons, including ALL iwi should be treating the beautiful mountain with all due respect. Like you say, we are fortunate to have such a beautiful landmark.

My comment regarding non-iwi simply recognizes the observable fact that Maori generally have respect for tapu embedded in their culture and upbringing, while non-iwi sometimes don't... Non-Racist; sad, but true. I did say: "All"... :-)
