UPDATE 4.38PM: Police can now confirm two people have died following a serious crash involving two vehicles on Whangamata Road, Marotiri, Taupo.

Another person has been taken to hospital with moderate injuries, says a police spokesperson.

"The road remains blocked and Police ask motorists to continue to avoid the area.

"Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are underway."

Emergency services are responding to a serious crash involving two vehicles on Whangamata Road, Marotiri, Taupo.

Police were notified of the crash at 11am, says a police spokepserson.

"The road is blocked and motorists are asked to avoid the area.

"Serious Crash Unit has been notified.

"More information will be provided when available."
