A Givealittle page has been set up following a suspicious fire at the Rainbow Youth Tauranga Drop in centre at the Historic Village.

A blaze broke out in the building just after midnight.

A Tauranga City Council spokesperson says no one was in the building at the time or has been injured in the fire.

"Fire crews were quickly at the scene and prevented the fire from spreading to any other buildings at the village.

"Police have been on site overnight and will carry out an investigation into the cause of the fire.

"The affected building is on the outskirts of the village away from other buildings.

"The area has been cordoned off from the rest of the village, which will be open for business as usual today."

Following the fire, Rainbow Youth board member Shaneel Lal has launched a Givealittle page with all funds to be donated to Rainbow Youth.

In a post on Givealittle, Shaneel says 'this is a very distressing time for Rainbow Youth and the queer community in Aotearoa, especially in Tauranga. While we uncover the details, I am putting up this Give a Little for people to donate to Rainbow Youth during this time”.

People wanting to donate, can do so by clicking here.

Disturbed.

Although we live in stressful times and levels of frustration are rising, anyone who thinks that burning something down will make it better, is disturbed. Whether this was a Religious extremist believing they are doing "God's work", or a client of the centre, with some real or imagined grievance against it, or just someone who delights in lighting fires, arson can never be the answer. I hope the Foundation manages to raise the funds to rebuild. And thanks to our Fire Service for the great job they do; the whole village could easily have been lost, but for them.
