Jamaican men fastest in the world

Jamaica once again proved it produces the world's fastest men as the island nation's sprinters dominated the field in the final of the 200m this morning.

Usain Bolt gave the crowd a regal wave before blowing away the field in a time of 19.32 to become the first man to capture both the 100m and 200m crowns at successive Olympics.

Compatriots Yohan Blake and Warren Weir rounded out the medal positions as the Jamaicans finished 1-2-3 in a race that was never in doubt.

Kiwis:

Kiwi BMX rider Marc Willers cruised into the semi-finals after finishes of first, second and first. He, like woman's hope Sarah Walker of Kawerau, will contest the semi-finals in the wee small hours of Saturday morning.

Barely a breath of wind was felt in Weymouth as racing was abandoned.

The men's 470 pair of Jason Saunders and Paul Snow-Hansen is out of contention for a medal but look likely for a top five finish, while Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie will race for gold against the British pair when the weather allows.

Brent Newdick, in a field among the world's most complete athletes, finished a credible twelfth in the men's decathlon.

He ran a season's best 4minutes 38.20seconds in the 1500m and was strong in the throwing events throughout.

Lisa Carrington and Erin Taylor finished seventh in the Olympic final of the K2 500m.

Lisa will race in the heats of the K1 200m tonight, before the women's hockey team, featuring Tauranga girls Gemma Flynn and Sam Charlton, tangle with Great Britain for bronze tomorrow morning.
